Keep Your Home Cool in the Summertime

Home Ownership Home Improvement

As outdoor temperatures heat up, you may be looking for ways to cool down the inside of your home. Use our tips to keep your home cool this summer without blasting your air conditioner.

Window Treatments

While this may seem obvious, keeping your blinds and curtains closed during the day can help eliminate any unwanted heat. In fact, according to Family Handyman, up to 30 percent of exterior heat can come from your windows.

Close Doors

Be sure to close the doors of unused rooms during the day to help contain cool air in your most frequented spaces.

Sheets

It's always a good idea to switch out your bed sheets but is especially a smart move during the summertime. Flannel sheets might work well during the winter months, however switching to cotton sheets will allow for cooler and more comfortable sleeping in the summer.

Rotate Ceiling Fans

Did you know changing the direction of your ceiling fans to run counterclockwise can create a cooling wind chill effect? This rotation pulls cool air down creating a more enjoyable temperature for all.

Night Air

Temperatures can drop during the evening, making it a smart move to open windows before going to bed. Better yet, you can position fans to create a nice cross breeze for added comfort.

Utilize Your Grill

As most know, utilizing your oven and stove can increase your home's temperature. During those really hot summer days, try utilizing your grill for cooking instead. Plus, having shorter summer months in the Midwest is a great excuse to get as much use as possible out of your outdoor grill.
